Inspiration can come when you least expect it

Hey everyone! Thanks for following my blog and being interested in my writing.
Some of you may be asking--Austin, since when do you write short stories? Well, I began to realize that I am already a professional writer of sorts--I am an attorney, after all. I spend my days writing legal briefs and motions trying to be as persuasive and convincing as I can. I also spend a lot of my time with words--choosing just the right ones and playing with precision of language.
Ok, so you get it. I write a lot. But how did I start writing fantasy fiction? The simplest way I can say it is, I just did.
The long answer is that for the past few years, I have developed an interest in tabletop games. I admit, sometimes it is an unhealthy interest (just ask my wife)--but nevertheless, I enjoy the stories, the game mechanics, and the human interaction that tabletop games can bring. Some of my favorite tabletop games have been cast in the fantasy genre.
Just the other day, I was sitting next to a friend of mine who was doodling in his notebook and I got inspired. I thought of a setting for what I thought would be an interesting tabletop game. Then, I thought it'd be fun to write short stories to introduce the characters I envisioned in this game. And there you have it--about three days later I was fleshing out the makings of my first short story, Crystalline Kingdom: Darkness Stirs.
Although I feel like the book is a great read (I am hoping you do too), I acknowledge that it is my first foray into fantasy fiction. I have a lot more planned for this Crystalline Kingdom series and I have a few more ideas in store as well. So, I hope that as I continue writing, my ability to tell stories will improve and you will enjoy the ride.
Why tell you all this? Well, because inspiration can come from anywhere and when it does, you just have to seize it and see where it takes you!
